Peter, Our Hero

As told to us by Sean
Passed down by Peanut

Peter and Sean are no longer with us. They went to Rainbow Bridge several years ago. I was not born yet when this incident took place. But I have tried to pass it along because I don't want us to ever forget how Peter became our hero.

It was around 1:30 in the morning. The kitties were sleeping and dreaming of mice, cheese, and catnip. Some of them were in the living room on the sofa and some were in bed cuddled up next to Mom.

Then suddenly the doorbell rang! Loud and shrill, it rang again. By this time, most of the cats were up and ran to the front door to check things out. All except Peter. He turned the other way and headed to Mom's bedroom.

Leaping up on the bed and jumping on Mom, Peter wanted to wake her up.
But she had heard the bell ring the second time and was already pulling off the covers.

Walking to the front room, Mom approached the door quietly and peeked through the peephole. The overhead light had burned out several nights ago and Mom hadn't had time to replace it. So she couldn't see a thing. Also, she wasn't about to open the door at that time of night.

Then Peter jumped up on a small end table close to the door and started growling! He hissed and meowed and growled like we had never before heard him. He sounded like a wild tiger!

Mom heard voices saying something about a loud angry cat and that maybe they ought to leave. Then we heard footsteps and the intruders were gone.

"Who would be visiting this time of night?" Mom muttered to herself as she went back to bed, thinking that maybe the people had the wrong house. That night Mom had every one of us in bed with her. Even though it would be crowded, we decided that "safety in numbers" was best. Besides, that was the furthest place from the front door.

The next morning, Mom put new light bulbs at our front and back doors. She also gave us different kinds of treats. Peter, of course, got extra. He was our hero. We never knew he could be so brave or that he could sound so ferocious. He "saved the day" ( or night). We were so thankful that Peter was our brother.
