Humans are
Strange

Day-Late
The humans are getting all excited about spring and things
turning green. All the standing water from the spring thaw is starting
to get a nice coat of green pond scum too. There’s even some green
mold on the north side of the tree trunks where the sun doesn’t
get to dry it off much. The grass is turning from brown to green. Wait
a couple weeks and they’ll be gritching about having to mow the
lawn again. Or muttering about the “green” they’ll
be spending to have somebody else cut the grass. And some of them look
decidedly green when they think of all the work spring cleaning entails.
There’s just no pleasing them!
Personally, when I think of spring, I think of purple. The early crocuses
and snow iris poking their little heads above the remnants of snow piles
really give me hope. And the lilacs smell so good! Another good smell
in spring is hyacinth, and we have purple ones there too. The tulips
come next, with purple ones mixed in with the pink, red, white, and
yellow ones. Finally the pansies and violas (known as Johnny Jump-ups)
appear with their purple and yellow “faces.” Flowers are
pretty and make me happy.
But the best thing of all is the very pale lavender flowers on my catnip
plants. Some days I just go outside and lay face down on my nip! I think
I like it better fresh than dried. But some times Meowmie will make
us “nip-sicles” by folding a sprig of catnip with 6 or 8
leaves on it in a paper towel and microwaving it on high for about 6
seconds. Then she holds onto the stem, and we come and eat the leaves
right off it. And the smell is heavenly!! But she has to be very careful
and watch it through the door of the microwave so the paper towel doesn’t
catch on fire. A friend of hers tried this and just put them in for
10 seconds, and they had to wash the kitchen curtains to get the smell
of smoke out of them.
So, from this feline’s perspective, purple is the “happy”
color of spring. Let the humans think of green and all the work it brings
with it. We all know that humans are strange!
